1α,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 is the active hormonal form of vitamin D. It inhibits proliferation and induces differentiation of a variety of cells including osteoclasts, HL-60 cells. It is a central regulator of bone and calcium homeostasis. A polymorphism in the vitamin D receptor gene has been link ed to a genetic predisposition to osteoporosis. It inhibits proliferation and induces differentiation of a variety of cells including osteoclasts, keratinocytes, HL-60 cells vascular smooth muscle cells and bone marrow macrophage precursors.

If necessary, exact concentration may be redetermined spectrophotometrically in ethanol solution (λmax=264 nm; ε = 19,000 M-1cm-1; 2.2μg/ml yields A264=0.10).
